ABSTRACT

Similar to the musicality quality of how ‘Totem Ancestor’ expresses the combination of simple rhythms that results in a complicated structure, the design aims to achieve complex movements through the use of basic geometries. It concentrates on a singular pattern and depending on it to come together as one does form inter-connecting spaces in a disorderly manner. Like the music that has no motif and breaks the anticipation and expectations, the free expression in geometries aims to achieve a dynamic form that has no restriction, only guided by the principle of certain sets of standardized dimensions. 

The strategies to achieve the essence of ‘Totem Ancestor’ is also based on the idea of using different opacity of materials to enhance to ‘complexity’ through lights and shadow play and various degree of visual connection from one point to another. Such as opaque materials, two levels of translucent materials, and transparency will also allow the overall mass of the design to look lighter and less massive. Therefore, portraying the contrast in lightness and heaviness of the music.
